A chronological guide to the student planning process for college and career preparation


6th Grade (In preparation for Seaman Middle School)

Counselors visit all elementary schools to review the Seaman Middle School program planning guide and review course options in February. Students take these enrollment materials home to review with guardians.

One week after the counselors visit elementary school, 6th grade teachers enroll students.

Students tour the middle school in early May as part of the student transition process.

Schedules for the upcoming year are posted in PowerSchool in late May or early June.

Schedule changes can be made in early June. Students can email, call, or stop by the middle school on an assigned day in late May or early June. Students can also contact counselors throughout the summer. If needed, students will have a few days when school starts to change schedules.

7th Grade

In February, counselors conduct a 7th grade assembly to review the Seaman Middle School program planning guide and review course options. Students take these enrollment forms home to review with guardians.

Students enroll in courses during Language Arts classes approximately one week after the enrollment assembly.

Schedules for the upcoming year are posted in PowerSchool in late May or early June.

8th Grade

Students begin the formal IPS process of creating digital portfolios using Career Cruising. They complete requirements throughout the year in Intro to Computer class. Requirements include: a career and college research, learning style inventories, career and school searches, education plans, career pathways, and extracurricular activities.

Students meet with College & Career Advocates once each semester. First semester meetings focus on the Career Cruising interest survey and getting to know their individual interests. Second semester meetings focus on Career Cruising, IPS, and courses/enrollment at the Seaman Freshman Center. Notes from these meetings are entered on the advocate page in PowerSchool.

Seaman High School counselors visit 8th graders in January, prior to the 8th Grade Curriculum Fair. Topics covered include: program planning guide review and enrollment forms.

Students attend the 8th Grade Curriculum Fair at SHS during the last week of January. Students learn about every department at Seaman High School.

Seaman High School counselors conduct an 8th grade parent meeting in February at Seaman High School to review the program planning guide and high school orientation.

8th grade students complete the enrollment process in their Intro to Computers class approximately one week after the enrollment assembly.

Schedules for the upcoming year are posted in PowerSchool in late May or early June.

Schedule changes can be made two weeks after the last day of school via email or a visit to the high school counseling office.
